Mullein: The Soothing Herb for Lung Health, Resilience and Immune Support

Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is one of those plants that quickly earns its place in any garden or home apothecary. With soft, silvery leaves and a tall flower spike that stands proud in the garden, this herb has become a customer favourite for good reason.

Why Mullein is So Loved

Mullein is known for its gentle support of the respiratory system. Herbalists often turn to it for dry, irritated lungs, lingering coughs, and to help open the breath. The soft leaves can be brewed into a tea or added to herbal smoke blends, while the yellow flowers are commonly used to make infused oils for soothing inflammation and earaches.

Aside from its medicinal value, mullein is a beautiful addition to any garden. Its height adds structure, and when in bloom, it draws in bees and beneficial insects. It’s one of those plants that feels both wild and cultivated, grounding and useful.

Growing Mullein

Mullein is a biennial plant, which means it forms a rosette of leaves in the first year and flowers in the second. It’s incredibly hardy and thrives with minimal care.

Season: Best sown in autumn or early spring
Soil: Prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soil
Watering: Light watering until established, then very low maintenance
Position: Full sun with space to spread
Fertilising: Not usually necessary but a light compost top-up won’t hurt

Once established, mullein will often self-seed. You can leave a flower spike to dry and collect seeds, or simply let it naturalise and pop up where it’s happy.
