Garden Updates May 2025
Autumn Prep & Greenhouse Progress
Written by Talishia
We’ve been pretty busy behind the scenes lately! The biggest development is that our greenhouse is finally up and running just in time for the cooler months, even though it’s still quite warm here in Maida Vale. Daytime temperatures are still reaching up to 26°C, with nighttime lows around 8°C. We’re definitely hanging out for a bit of rain, which looks promising by the end of next week.
The greenhouse will become our main space for seed starting, propagation, and housing tropical plants like moringa, lemongrass, bananas, and other herbaceous perennials. While the humidity has been great for cuttings, the heat inside the greenhouse is still climbing above 35°C not ideal just yet, but it’ll be perfect once winter hits. We’re excited to have it ready in time!
Shade House Construction is in Progress
We’re also working on building a new shade house. This will become our main production space and hold most of our nursery stock. Right now, our plants are still up near the house, but we’re keen to shift things down to free up space and stay more organised something we always seem to run out of.
Garden Progress
The garden itself is absolutely thriving. We’re in the process of expanding it further, which means pulling up grass and weeds and laying down lots of cardboard. It’s exhausting work, but also incredibly rewarding.
We’ve finally had some seed germinations come through! Plants looking good at the moment include Mullein, German Chamomile, Dyer’s Chamomile, Dong Quai, Hyssop, Rue, Old Man Salt Bush, Red Valerian, and Marijunilla all of which we expect to be ready and available on the website during winter.
On the harvest front, we’ve been busy cleaning and bagging seeds from summer and drying a heap of herbs especially tropical ones that either go dormant or die back over winter. We've had a great harvest of rosella, passionflower, and moringa, and it’s been a real joy processing them all.
We’ve also been reaping the rewards of the season with an abundant harvest of fruit and veg! Pumpkins, squash, chestnuts, lemons, oranges, mandarins, and bananas are all coming in strong—and we’re eagerly awaiting the first passionfruits and papayas. With so much to go around, we’ve been sharing the excess with friends, family, and neighbours by leaving a few out the front of our home to pass on the goodness.
As always, this garden keeps us grounded, grateful, and learning every day. We’re excited for what winter will bring and we’re so glad to have you along for the journey. Whether you’re growing with us, supporting our nursery, or just following along, thank you for being part of our little patch of green.
We’d love to see you at the Kalamunda Garden Festival! Come say hello, explore our seasonal range of medicinal plants, seeds, and dried herbs, and have a chat about all things garden-grown and earth-loving. See you there!
