Ribwort Plantain is a hardy perennial herb with distinctive narrow, lance-shaped leaves and tall flower stems topped with compact, greenish-brown flower heads. It has a long history of traditional herbal use and is a wonderful addition to medicinal, natural and wildlife gardens.
An easy-to-grow and adaptable plant, Ribwort Plantain can tolerate a range of conditions and is well suited to naturalised gardens, cottage gardens and low-maintenance planting. The flower heads attract beneficial insects and the plant can readily establish once settled.
Growing Conditions
Season: Spring – Autumn
Position: Full Sun to Part Shade
Soil: Adaptable; prefers moderately fertile, well-drained soil
Watering: Water regularly while establishing; drought tolerant once established
Fertilising: Feed with compost or organic liquid fertiliser during active growth
Height: Approximately 30–60 cm
Spacing: 20–30 cm
Ribwort Plantain is a resilient perennial that requires very little maintenance once established. It adapts well to a variety of soil conditions and is particularly suited to natural and medicinal gardens.
Harvest the young leaves and flowering stems as required. For drying, harvest healthy leaves and dry thoroughly before storing.
Allow some plants to flower and set seed if you would like to encourage natural regeneration throughout the garden.
Ribwort Plantain grows well alongside other hardy medicinal and naturalised herbs. Suitable companions include Yarrow, Calendula, Chamomile, Dandelion and Self-Heal.
