Cnicus benedictus
Blessed Thistle is an attractive annual herb with deeply toothed, prickly green leaves and small yellow flowers. Traditionally valued as a medicinal herb, it has a long history of use in European herbal traditions and makes an interesting addition to medicinal, cottage and herb gardens.
A hardy and easy-to-grow plant, Blessed Thistle enjoys sunny conditions and well-drained soil. Its distinctive foliage and yellow flowers add texture and interest to the garden, while the flowers can attract beneficial insects.
Growing Conditions
Season: Spring – Summer
Position: Full Sun
Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil
Watering: Water regularly while establishing; allow the soil to dry slightly between watering
Fertilising: Feed with compost or organic liquid fertiliser during active growth
Height: Approximately 30–60 cm
Spacing: 30–45 cm
Blessed Thistle is an annual herb that grows quickly in warm conditions. Plant in a sunny position with good drainage and avoid consistently wet soil.
The leaves are covered with small prickles, so take care when handling the plant. Allow flowers to mature and set seed if you would like to collect seed for future planting or encourage it to self-seed.
Harvest leaves when the plant is actively growing. For drying, harvest healthy foliage and dry thoroughly before storing.
Blessed Thistle can be grown alongside other traditional medicinal and cottage garden plants including Calendula, Chamomile, Yarrow, Lavender and Lemon Balm.
