Sceletium tortuosum is a South African succulent plant with a long history of traditional use by Indigenous communities of Southern Africa. Traditionally known as kanna, channa or kougoed, the plant has been valued for generations and has an interesting place in South African herbal traditions. It is also an attractive and unusual succulent for home gardens and collections.
WAYS TO PREPARE
Traditionally, different parts of the plant have been prepared using various traditional methods. This plant is also an excellent ornamental succulent and can be enjoyed as part of a succulent, herb or ethnobotanical garden.
GROWING CONDITIONS
Season: Spring / Summer - Perennial
Soil: Rich and well draining
Watering: Water regularly while establishing. Once established, prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate drier conditions.
Position: Full Sun to Part Shade
Fertilizing: Compost, Manure, Liquid feed
Use: Traditionally valued as an ethnobotanical plant. Also makes an attractive garden succulent and container plant.
Growing tips: Can be grown successfully in pots and containers. Prefers warm conditions and well-drained, sandy soil. Allow the soil to dry between watering and avoid prolonged wet conditions.
