Rhubarb Plant
Rhubarb Plant (Rheum rhabarbarum)
Bring a productive and beautiful perennial vegetable to your garden with a Rhubarb Plant from Made For The Earth. Rhubarb is a hardy, long-lived plant with large green leaves and vibrant red stalks, making it both useful and ornamental in the garden.
Rhubarb stalks are commonly used in pies, crumbles, jams, sauces and desserts. Once established, plants can provide harvests for many years with the right care.
Growing Conditions
Season: Autumn – Spring
Position: Full Sun to Part Shade
Soil: Rich, fertile and well-drained
Watering: Keep consistently moist, particularly during warmer weather
Fertilising: Feed regularly with compost and organic fertiliser during active growth
Height: Approximately 60–90 cm
Spacing: 60–90 cm
Growing Tips
Plant in rich soil with plenty of organic matter and give rhubarb plenty of space to develop. Keep the soil moist but avoid waterlogging. Remove flower stalks as they appear to encourage the plant to put its energy into producing strong stems.
Harvest only well-established plants, taking a few outer stalks at a time and leaving plenty of stalks behind for continued growth.
Important: Rhubarb stalks are edible when cooked, but the leaves should not be eaten.
Companion Plants
Good companions include Garlic, Onions, Chives, Brassicas, Beans and Strawberries.
