Syrian Oregano ‘Origanum syriacumis a beautifully aromatic perennial herb with soft grey-green foliage and a strong, distinctive oregano fragrance. Also known as Za’atar, it is traditionally used throughout Middle Eastern cuisine and is valued for its intensely flavoured leaves, which can be used fresh or dried.

A hardy Mediterranean herb, Syrian Oregano makes a wonderful addition to herb gardens, edible landscapes and pots. It thrives in warm, sunny conditions and is well suited to Perth’s Mediterranean climate. During flowering, it produces delicate white flowers that are attractive to bees and other beneficial insects.

Growing Conditions

  • Season: Spring – Autumn

  • Position: Full Sun

  • Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil

  • Watering: Water regularly while establishing, then allow the soil to dry between watering

  • Fertilising: Feed with compost or organic liquid fertiliser during active growth

  • Height: Approximately 40–60 cm

  • Spacing: 40–60 cm

Growing Tips

Syrian Oregano prefers warm, sunny conditions and excellent drainage. Avoid planting in areas where soil remains consistently wet, particularly during winter.

Harvest the leaves regularly to encourage fresh, bushy growth. The aromatic leaves can be used fresh or dried for cooking, herbal tea and traditional herbal preparations.

Allow the plant to flower to attract bees and beneficial insects, or prune back after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage new growth.

Companion Plants

Syrian Oregano grows well alongside other Mediterranean and drought-tolerant herbs. Suitable companions include Sage, Thyme, Rosemary, Lavender, Marjoram and Calendula.
